Northvolt Receives Indicative Purchase Offer from Abroad

According to the insolvency administrators, the business areas of Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt under their supervision have received a preliminary purchase offer. It is said to concern both the battery plant in Skellefteå as well as the research center in Västerås, which is located east of Stockholm. The administrators claim they are soon expecting another offer, also without further details. The Skellefteå factory in northern Sweden was originally scheduled to close by the end of June 2025. It remains unclear whether the offer will delay or prevent the intended closure.

Downward spiral since the end of 2024

Northvolt had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States at the end of November 2024. At that time, the company had debts of around 5.8 billion US dollars but only around 30 million in liquidity. Despite several restructuring initiatives, the company was unable to secure sufficient financing and filed for bankruptcy in Sweden in March 2025. Reasons for this included rising capital costs, geopolitical uncertainties, and supply chain problems. In April 2025, the workforce in Sweden was reduced from around 5,000 to approximately 1,700 employees.
