Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt will stop producing cells at its Skellefteå site by the end of June 2025. According to the insolvency administrator, this decision forms part of ongoing insolvency proceedings in Sweden. Attempts to find a buyer for the cell production operations have so far been unsuccessful. This means that the companyʼs cell production in its home country has come to a complete end.
German site not affected
The plant had only been operating at limited capacity recently, with Scania as one of its last customers. However, the commercial vehicle manufacturer has ended its business relationship with Northvolt in the meantime. Northvolt filed for creditor protection in the USA in November 2024 and for insolvency in Sweden in March 2025. Still, the planned Northvolt factory in the German town of Heide will not be affected. Northvolt Germany is considered legally independent. Financing for the project, including through a convertible bond from the state-owned KfW bank, is currently under review by the state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein.
