Battery Research in Germany: Cuts are Official

The feared cuts to battery research in Germany are now reality. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) confirmed that from 2025, no new battery research projects will be funded. Only ongoing projects and those starting in 2024 will still receive support.

“Endangering the competitiveness of German industries”

While 118 million euros are allocated for battery research in 2025, no new project commitments are included. According to the Lithium-Ion Battery Competence Network (KLiB), this decision “endangers the competitiveness of German industries.” In contrast, countries like China and South Korea are heavily investing in future technologies like electric mobility and renewable energy storage. Industry representatives, such as the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) and the MEET Battery Research Center, express deep concern over the disconnect between political goals and the reality of the cuts, which could “severely impact Germanyʼs innovation capabilities.”
