Renault subsidiary Ampere as the auto makerʼs electric vehicle division has begun construction of a battery cell laboratory at its technical center in Lardy, France. The facility is expected to be completed and operational in the second half of 2025. It is intended to play a key role in the development of Renaultʼs next generations of electric vehicles and to strengthen the companyʼs battery expertise, particularly in evaluating the processes of its cell suppliers.
Anticipating technological breakthroughs
The laboratory will cover an area of 3,000 square meters on two levels and will house more than 120 pieces of equipment. The facility will include a 600-square-meter dry laboratory and, in addition to prototyping cells, will enable electrophysical and chemical characterization. In the laboratory, cell performance and behavior will be closely studied with regard to durability, rapid charging, disassembling. The goal of the research is to define trade-offs between performance, cost, lifetime, and safety and to anticipate technological breakthroughs.
