Fraunhofer FFB Focuses on Solid-State Battery

The Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production (FFB) in Münster, Germany, has started its fourth subproject for the construction and expansion of the facility. The Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University is supporting technology development and production planning. The “FoFeBat4” project focuses on the integration of technologies for efficient and sustainable battery cell production with a special emphasis on the development of solid-state batteries.

Technology shift mean challenges

Solid-state batteries are seen as a potential alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries due to their advantages such as higher energy density and safety. The solid-state battery is recognized by the industry as a key technology that could open up new opportunities, for example the use of lithium metal-based anodes. However, switching production from conventional batteries to solid-state batteries is challenging due to differences in manufacturing processes, production environment requirements, and materials.

Testing under near-series production conditions

FoFeBat4 will focus on testing different material systems and manufacturing processes for solid-state batteries. Existing electrolyte systems will be synthesized on a large scale and evaluated in different cell chemistries with respect to performance, operating conditions, and safety aspects. In the project, PEM of RWTH Aachen University will focus particularly on testing these material systems under near-production conditions in dry room and clean room environments.
