Silicon Anodes: PEM and Nanoloy Collaborate

The Chair of Production Engineering of E-Mobility Components (PEM) of RWTH Aachen University together with engineering service provider PEM Motion has entered into a partnership with the Dutch start-up company Nanoloy. The aim is to develop advanced electrodes and manufacturing processes for batteries.

Pilot line to start this year

Nanoloy focuses on the development of high-performance silicon anodes which are to be produced at lower costs using a novel plasma coating process. A research and development pilot line is currently being built at PEM’s Electric Mobility Laboratory and is expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2024. The facility will be used to advance electrode development and bring the technology to gigafactory scale.

Increasing energy density by 50%

Over the next three years, the partners aim to increase battery life by 33% and energy density by 50%. At the same time, they plan to raise safety levels and reduce production costs by 40%. Nanoloy envisions batteries with up to 3,000 charge cycles, an energy density of up to 450 watt-hours per kilogram, and production costs of less than $70 per kilowatt-hour. The company plans to build a ten gigawatt-hour production facility in the EU by 2028. The location has not yet been decided.
