NIO Holding and Chinese automotive technology group Zhejiang Geely Holding have signed a strategic partnership for battery swapping in electric vehicles. NIO’s “chargeable, swappable, upgradeable” service system is said to represent the best charging solution in the industry. For several years, Geely’s Yiyi Power division has been operating an own battery swapping system for commercial vehicles and would like to expand its presence in other cities.
Common standards for compatible products
Under the agreement, the two parties will jointly develop two standards for battery swapping for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The partnership aims to standardize swapping technology and expand the battery swap network. Both parties intend to develop vehicles that are compatible with each other’s swapping systems. The companies have not yet announced a timetable or further details of the agreed objectives. Meanwhile, NIO plans to work with other partners as well to start building a joint battery exchange network.
