Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) plans to enter the battery manufacturing sector and aims to build a gigafactory for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries by 2026. At the same time, India’s leading private company is focusing on accelerating the commercialization of sodium-ion battery technology by scaling up sodium-ion cell production to a megawatt level by 2025 and then rapidly expanding to the giga level.
Materials, cells, battery packs, and energy storage solutions
The planned battery factory will manufacture materials, cells, and battery packs, including container-based energy storage solutions. In addition, the gigafactory will include a battery recycling facility to promote circular economy. In June 2021, RIL announced plans to build four factories in India, including an energy storage factory. Production of solar cells, electrolyzer, and fuel cells were also part of these plans.
