BMW Group has started construction of a logistics center for high-voltage batteries outside its plant site in Leipzig, Germany. The planned site covers twelve hectares, with eight hectares to be built in the first construction phase. According to BMW, completion is planned for mid-2024.
Total investment of up to 100 million euros
The logistics center will include a logistics hall for fifth-generation high-voltage batteries, along with an efficient loading tunnel and an office building. Currently, BMW still uses fifth-generation prismatic cells, but plans to transition to round cells starting in 2025 as part of the “New Class”. BMW has already taken the second construction phase into account when planning the first phase. While the exact dimensions of this next step are not explicitly stated, it is clear that BMW envisages an investment of up to 100 million euros for both construction phases.
500 new jobs
In total, around 500 jobs will be created at the Supply Center North in both phases of the project. The BMW plant in Leipzig already supplies every third battery module for the group’s all-electric vehicles, specifically the models BMW iX1, BMW i5, and BMW iX.
