Japanese car manufacturer Suzuki is set to acquire Kanadevia Corporationʼs solid-state lithium-ion battery business. Both have signed a contract to this effect, with the transaction being scheduled to close on July 1st, 2026, subject to customary closing conditions.
SSB development since 2006
Kanadevia has been working on developing solid-state lithium-ion batteries since 2006. According to the company, the batteries are produced by a proprietary dry manufacturing process. Unlike conventional lithium-ion systems, they do not use liquid electrolytes. The company cites several advantages of this design, including increased safety, as there is no risk of liquid leakage, and greater resistance to environmental influences. In addition, the batteries are said to be capable of operating within a wide temperature range. These technical features make them particularly well-suited for applications outside of traditional consumer goods or vehicle platforms, such as in the aerospace industry.
Continuation of existing technology
With the acquisition, Suzuki plans to continue and further develop the existing technologies. This includes development, engineering, and sales of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries.
