BMW and CATL to Collaborate on Battery Data Exchange

Chinese battery manufacturer CATL and BMW Group have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in Beijing to strengthen their collaboration beyond traditional battery supply. Under the new agreement, the partners intend to launch pilot projects for trusted data exchange under the European Battery Passport framework, designed to improve tracking of battery life cycle information and support regulatory compliance.

Standardized data architectures

The partners also emphasize the importance of carbon footprinting in the electric vehicle battery supply chain, reflecting increasing focus on decarbonization and life cycle transparency. The collaboration builds on a long-standing relationship dating back to 2012, evolving from pure battery procurement to strategic coordination on technology and sustainability. BMW and CATL plan to leverage standardized data architectures such as Catena-X to facilitate secure cross-border data flows.
