New BMW Site in Hungary is Starting Point for Gen6 Batteries

BMW Group has commisioned its new site in Debrecen, Hungary, thereby laying new foundations for its battery strategy for the “New Class.” The production facility is the groupʼs first one where sixth-generation (Gen6) high-voltage batteries are manufactured directly at the vehicle plant in order to improve efficiency, quality, and cost control.

Higher energy density and faster charging times

Gen6 batteries are considered a key technology for the New Class. They are expected to enable higher energy density, faster charging times, and significantly lower costs. By integrating assembly at the factory premises, BMW is following the “Local-for-Local” principle, which prioritizes short transport routes, close integration with vehicle production, and greater supply security. According to the company, seamless inline testing and a 100-percent final inspection are designed to ensure quality standards. With the start of series production of the new BMW iX3 at the end of October 2025, Debrecen will become the first location where New Class vehicle and battery technology will be brought together.

Kick-off for global rollout

Debrecen is thus considered a test case for scaling new battery technologies across the group. The production of Gen6 batteries in Hungary marks the start of the global rollout. A total of five BMW locations are set to manufacture the new cell generation in series. In addition to battery technology, BMW is focusing on largely fossil-free production in Debrecen. Part of the energy requirements will be covered by a large-scale photovoltaic system on site.
