US sodium-ion battery manufacturer Natron Energy has ceased operations. The company informed Michigan labor authorities that its plant in Holland as well as its headquarters in Santa Clara, California, will be permanently closed. This also means that plans for a large-scale factory in Edgecombe County in North Carolina have been canceled. The project, which had been announced in 2024, was to receive an investment of 1.4 billion US dollars. The intended annual capacity was 24 gigawatt-hours.
Securing financing failed
Natron Energy tried until the very end to secure new capital from existing and potential investors. At the same time, the company claimed it was seeking customer orders. However, at the end of August 2025, the company discontinued these efforts because management was unable to secure sufficient funds for ongoing operations. Natron Energy had developed sodium-ion battery technology based on Prussian-blue electrode materials. According to the company, the batteries were designed to deliver high performance, a long service life, and complete fire safety.
