BlueOval SK Begins Battery Production in Kentucky

The BlueOval SK joint venture by Ford and SK On has started commercial production at its Kentucky 1 plant in Glendale. On August 19th, 2025, the first batteries were manufactured and are set to be used in electric Ford models like the F-150 Lightning and the E-Transit with extended range. The plant is part of the BlueOval SK Battery Park, which consists of two battery production facilities in Kentucky.

Capacity of 80 gigawatt-hours

Kentucky 1 is the joint ventureʼs first factory to operate in the United States. The Glendale plants are expected to reach a combined annual production capacity of over 80 gigawatt-hours. Construction of the battery park is part of an eleven-billion-dollar investment which also includes cell production in Stanton, Tennessee. The project is partially financed by a 9.6-billion-dollar government loan. Demand for electric vehicles is currently growing more slowly than Ford and other manufacturers expected. According to a Bloomberg report, Ford is considering selling surplus batteries from its plants to other buyers.
