TU Braunschweig to Build Battery Research Center

The Technical University of Braunschweig has laid the foundation for its new Center for Circular Production of Next Batteries and Fuel Cells (CPC). From 2027 onward, approximately 150 researchers will be employed there to develop processes for the circular production and recycling of batteries and fuel cells. With an area of 3,700 square meters, the research building is estimated to cost around 73 million euros, most of which will be funded by the federal government and the state of Lower Saxony.

Material recovery and resynthesis

The CPC is part of the regional Braunschweig LabFactories for Batteries and More network and will operate in close collaboration with the Battery LabFactory Braunschweig and the Fraunhofer Center for Energy Storage and Systems. The goal is to develop technologies for closed material cycles, from the recovery of critical raw materials to new cell concepts. One of the CPCʼs main focuses is the recovery and resynthesis of materials which will be integrated into new manufacturing processes in the early stages of development. Research topics include solid-state batteries, membrane-based flow batteries, fuel cells, and metal-air systems.
