Mangrove Lithium from Canada has unveiled plans for a new lithium refinery in North America. According to the company, the new facility will be twenty times larger than its first production facility in Delta, British Columbia, and is expected to have an annual capacity of 20,000 tons of battery-grade lithium, enough to supply around 500,000 electric vehicles. The location of the plant and timelines for the start of construction have not yet been decided.
No waste products, lower costs
To secure demand, Mangrove Lithium has signed several letters of intent with U.S. battery factories with the intention to cover the entire sales volume of the planned annual production. Mangrove highlights its flexible, lower-emission electrolysis technology, which reportedly produces no waste products and incurs lower costs. Unlike the existing plant, the new refinery will be able to process spodumene concentrate. The existing plant in Delta is expected to begin operations by the end of 2025 and is designed for an annual production of approximately 1,000 tons of battery-grade lithium.
