Japanese-Chinese battery manufacturer AESC has begun series production at its new factory in Douai in northern France. According to the company, the plant has an annual production capacity of ten gigawatt-hours. Currently, the facility is manufacturing batteries for French automotive manufacturer Renault. AESC states that the site covers the entire production chain, from electrode manufacturing and cell assembly to battery module integration.
Workforce planned to hit 1,000
The factory was built with financial support from French and European institutions, including Bpifrance, Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, and the European Investment Bank. Construction of the factory falls under Franceʼs industrial policy strategy, which aims to achieve greater independence in critical technologies. Production at the plant begins four years after it was announced as part of the “Choose France” initiative. The facility currently employs 650 people with plans to increase the workforce to around 1,000.
