Samsung SDI Invests in Renovation and Expansion of Its Hungary Plant

Samsung SDI is investing a portion of the 1.65 trillion won (approximately one billion euros) raised in May 2025 through a capital increase into renovating and expanding its battery plant in Göd, Hungary. According to reports, the company plans to invest 323.6 billion won directly in the production facility. These measures are intended to facilitate a production changeover and capacity expansion.

The Göd site has been Samsung SDI’s main European production site for years. In 2017, the first factory hall was converted from a former picture tube production facility. A second construction phase was completed in 2022. According to the company, the two production units have a combined annual capacity of around 40 GWh.

Until now, two types of prismatic battery cells have been manufactured at the site: wound cells in the first hall and stacked cells in the second. However, demand is increasingly focused on the stacked design, which offers higher energy density. Consequently, the first hall is also being converted to this technology. At the same time, the second hall is being expanded to accommodate increased production.

These planned measures are intended to meet the increased demand from car manufacturers in Europe. In addition to its existing customers, which include BMW and Volkswagen, Samsung SDI has secured contracts for stacked prismatic cells with Hyundai and Kia in Europe.
