United States battery materials company Ascend Elements is set to receive up to 320 million US dollars in funding from the Polish Ministry of Development and Technology to build a production plant for cathode precursor materials (pCAM) in Poland. According to the ministry, this is one of the highest single grants in the countryʼs history. The subsidy is part of the EUʼs “Temporary Crisis and Transition Framework” program, which aims to encourage investment in the energy transition.
One site already in view
The planned production plant would be Ascend Elementsʼ first European production facility. The company claims it has already identified a location, but a final commitment for the investment is still pending. Ascend Elements currently operates a recycling plant in Zawiercie, Poland, in partnership with Elemental Strategic Metals. In contrast, the new pCAM plant would be entirely owned by Ascend Elements.
Using the Hydro-to-Cathode technology
The company has announced that it will use its proprietary Hydro-to-Cathode technology in Poland. This process is intended to enable the production of nickel-manganese-cobalt pCAM from used batteries. According to the results of Ascend Elementʼs internal life cycle analysis, this process is expected to produce lower emissions than conventional methods.
