In Münster, Germany, the Fraunhofer Research Institution for Battery Cell Production FFB has begun construction of its FFB Fab. After the institutionʼs second construction phase, modern production and research facilities covering an area of 20,000 square meters are to be completed by the end of 2027.
Developing sustainable production processes
The center aims to bridge the gap between basic research and industrial application, focusing on providing scientific support for the development of sustainable production processes for battery cells. The project is supported by investments of approximately 320 million euros from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and up to 500 million euros from the federal government.
Scale-up under industrial conditions
In April 2024, the FFB PreFab, a pilot plant for the small-scale production of battery cells, had been inaugurated. In the new FFB Fab, the processes developed at the PreFab will be scaled up under real industrial conditions. According to Fraunhofer, companies along the entire battery cell value chain will have the opportunity to test and further develop production steps in a practical environment.
