Redwood to Open R&D Center in San Francisco

Redwood Materials is expanding its presence on the United Statesʼ west coast with a new research and development (R&D) center in San Francisco. The company had announced several projects in recent months, including the development of cathode material production capacity and the upscaling of lithium-ion battery recycling facilities. According to Redwood, it processed about 20 gigawatt-hours of used batteries in the year of 2024, the equivalent of about 250,000 electric vehicles.

Focus on recycling and material recovery

The 15,000-square-foot building in San Franciscoʼs Design District will provide laboratory space for research into the production of cathode materials and other components. A particular focus will be on developing machines and processes to recover critical raw materials from spent batteries and extend the life of new ones. The site will complement the companyʼs existing facilities in Nevada and South Carolina. Redwood claims it chose San Francisco primarily because of the availability of a skilled workforce in mechanical, electrical, and software engineering.
