Samsung Launches Production of 46-Series Cylindrical Cells

Samsung SDI has launched production of 46-series cylindrical cells. The 4695-type cells with a diameter of 46 millimeters and a height of 95 millimeters are manufactured at the Cheonan plant in South Korea, with module assembly taking place at the companyʼs Vietnamese site. The first shipment is said to go to a customer in the United States for micromobility applications. According to Samsung SDI, series production has started more than a year ahead of schedule.

Special silicon-carbon composite anode

The cells are based on a high-nickel cathode (NCA) and a specially developed silicon-carbon composite anode. The new cells have a tabless design in which the electrodes are connected to the current collector without conventional contact tabs. As a result, the company claims a 90-percent reduction in internal resistance and an increase in current carrying capacity. In March 2025, the 46-series cells were first presented at the InterBattery trade fair. In addition to the 4695 type, the product portfolio also includes variants with different lengths. According to Samsung SDI, talks are underway with car manufacturers regarding the use in electric vehicles.
