German automotive supplier Webasto has entered into a partnership with Aachen-based recycling company “cylib”. The aim of the collaboration is to recover raw materials from used batteries and production waste from Webastoʼs European sites. The two companies have been working together on projects for the recycling-friendly design of batteries since 2023. The now formalized cooperation relates to the recycling of battery modules from the automotive supplierʼs vehicle production.
30 percent smaller carbon footprint
Webasto is one of the 100 largest automotive suppliers in the world. Based in Stockdorf near Munich, the company produces battery systems, high-voltage heaters, and roof solutions for cars and commercial vehicles. Meanwhile, “cylib” claims to use a combined process of mechanical, thermal, and hydrometallurgical steps to recover lithium, graphite, and other materials. The carbon footprint is said to be up to 30 percent smaller than with conventional processes. According to the company, this already exceeds the EU Battery Directiveʼs recycling quotas which require that 70 percent of lithium and 95 percent of other metals be recovered from used batteries by the year of 2030.
