CATL to Produce Second-Generation Sodium-Ion Battery

CATL has announced the second generation of its sodium-ion battery. According to Chief Scientist Wu Kai, it is set to hit the market in 2025, with mass production expected to begin in 2027. The new battery will be able to discharge at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius and will be offering enhanced safety features. While official energy density figures have not been released, CATL says it aims to exceed 200 watt-hours per kilogram.

Safer and more resistant to cold

Sodium-ion batteries are said to be safer and more resistant to cold than lithium-ion batteries but to have a lower energy density. Currently, production costs remain higher due to smaller-scale manufacturing and the declining price of lithium, which reduces sodium-ionʼs competitive edge. Although sodium-ion batteries should theoretically be more affordable, they are currently more expensive than lithium-ion alternatives due to lower production volumes and the lack of economies of scale. Experts estimate that costs could become competitive by 2027 as production ramps up.
