Technical University of Munich (TUM) has launched the Battery Start-up Incubator (BaStI), a funding program for battery start-ups which is supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research with 3.3 million euros. The goal is to accelerate the market entry of new technologies and reduce dependency on imports.
Strengthening domestic innovation
BaStI is part of the TUM Venture Labs and addresses start-ups from all over Germany. According to TUM, dependence on international markets, especially Asian producers, is a challenge that needs to be countered by strengthening domestic innovation. High development and production costs are regarded as a key problem for battery start-ups.
Access to industry partners and funding sources
BaStI offers scientific and entrepreneurial support through close collaboration with “UnternehmerTUM,” one of Europeʼs leading incubators. Start-ups get access to industry partners, mentors, and funding sources. In addition to BaStI, other BMBF funding programs are available to support start-ups from research all the way through to prototype production. The project is coordinated by TUMint.Energy Research and benefits from its proximity to the “e-conversion” excellence cluster.
