Honda has unveiled a solid-state battery demonstration production line in Sakura City, Japan. The plant is intended to pave the way for mass production, which is expected to begin in the second half of the decade. The production line covers an area of approximately 27,400 square meters and is equipped with systems for all production steps, including electrode material weighing and mixing, electrode coating and rolling, cell production, and module assembly.
Pilot production starting from 2025
According to Honda, the company plans to begin battery production in January 2025 and intends to review production technologies as well as costs for each process step and develop battery specifications. During development, Honda is focusing on both material properties and production methods. Although the the battery cellsʼ final specifications have not yet been determined, the production department is already involved in the decisions. This is intended to enable efficient material selection and a quick start to production. Honda plans to use the batteries in cars as well as in motorcycles and airplanes.
