US battery cell manufacturer Lyten has announced that it will acquire the production assets of former lithium metal battery manufacturer Cuberg in San Leandro, California. Lyten plans to convert the facility to lithium-sulfur battery production.
Total investment of up to 20 million dollars
Lyten plans to invest up to 20 million US dollars by 2025 to modernize the San Leandro site and its existing facility in San Jose. According to the company, the combined production capacity of the two sites is expected to reach up to 200 megawatt-hours per year at full capacity.
Production to start in late 2025
Commercial production in San Leandro is planned for the second half of 2025. With the takeover of the 119,000-square-foot Cuberg facility, Lyten not only expands its manufacturing footprint, but also acquires the existing development and production equipment. Cuberg was originally a subsidiary of Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt. In August 2024, however, Northvolt announced that it was moving lithium metal battery development to Sweden and closing its California facility.
