Australian lithium company Vulcan Energy has commissioned its Central Lithium Electrolysis Optimization Plant (CLEOP) at Industriepark Höchst in Frankfurt, Germany. The pilot plant is set to be the first in Europe to produce sustainable lithium hydroxide from feedstock to end product.
Optimization of production
According to the company, CLEOP will be used to optimize operational processes, test product quality, and train personnel. It will process lithium chloride from the upstream extraction plant in Landau into lithium hydroxide. With CLEOP, Vulcan Energy aims to strengthen Europeʼs independence from raw materials and support the transition to electric mobility. The knowledge gained from the pilot plant will be incorporated into a commercial production facility to also be built at Industriepark Höchst. In the prpjectʼs first phase, about 24,000 tons of lithium are scheduled to be produced annually – enough for about 500,000 electric vehicles, the company claims.
