South Korean battery manufacturer SK On is in talks with Nissan Motor about joint production of battery cells for the Japanese automaker in the US. According to industry sources, the talks could lead to the construction of an electric car battery plant in the U.S. that would supply Nissan.
Latest plausible start of delivery by 2027
As Japan’s newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun reports, the two companies are in the process of working out the details of a possible collaboration. The goal is to conclude talks in the coming months. Nissan is expected to include a business partnership with SK On in its three-year business plan which is soon to be released. Based on Nissan’s electric vehicle rollout schedule, SK On could likely begin supplying batteries to Nissan’s U.S. plant in 2026 or 2027.
Partnership would enable subsidies
The collaboration would allow Nissan to meet the requirements of the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 and thus to receive subsidies for its electric vehicles in the US. Currently, all batteries for Nissan’s electric vehicles come from Chinese manufacturer Envision AESC, making them ineligible for US subsidies.
