QuantumScape is continuing to advance the industrialization of its solid-state battery technology. The company claims its recently opened Eagle Line in San Jose, California, is not intended as a conventional pre-series production line but primarily as a technology demonstrator for future solid-state battery cell manufacturing processes.
Focus on ceramic separators
With the Eagle Line, QuantumScape aims to validate key process steps, material flows, and quality concepts under industrial conditions. Particular attention is given to the ceramic separator, whose production is widely regarded as one of the most critical and differentiating steps in solid-state battery technology. The facility is designed to help stabilize processes, reduce scrap rates, and realistically assess scaling potential.
Deliberately avoiding high volumes
According to QuantumScape, the Eagle Line is deliberately not designed for high-volume output. Instead, it is intended to serve as a bridge between laboratory development and large-scale manufacturing. Insights gained from operating the Eagle Line are expected to feed directly into the design of future production lines with significantly higher throughput. This approach differs from traditional pilot lines, which often already aim to replicate near-commercial production volumes.
On the stock exchange since 2020
QuantumScape was founded in 2010 and has been publicly listed since 2020 (NYSE). The company claims it has already delivered multi-layer cells with 24 layers to automotive partners.
