The German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is providing up to 25 million euros to enable eligible battery research projects to continue despite the recent loss of funding from the Climate and Transformation Fund (KTF). The measure is intended to avoid gaps in research and ensure technological competitiveness.
Continuity of research secured for now
Following the Federal Constitutional Courtʼs ruling on the revision of the KTF, no new funding will be available until 2025. Thus, the bridging funds will enable the execution of projects that have already been approved. The BMBF claims that high-performance battery technologies are crucial for the energy transition and the future of Germany as an industrial location. However, a long-term funding strategy for battery research remains open. Only the soon to be newly elected federal government can decide on further funding. Research institutions can still submit project outlines though.
