Asahi Kasei Battery Separator Corporation has started construction of a factory for the production of separators for lithium-ion batteries in Port Colborne in the Canadian province of Ontario. The facility is scheduled to go into operation in 2027.
Total investment of 1.2 billion dollars
The annual production capacity is estimated to be approximately 700 million square meters of coated battery separators. According to the company, the total investment will be approximately 1.24 billion US dollars. The new plant would be the first large-scale production facility for wet process separators in Canada.
Battery tech joint venture with Honda
The plant will be operated as a joint venture between Asahi Kasei and Honda. The two companies said Honda will hold a 25-percent stake in Asahi Kaseiʼs existing subsidiary, E-Materials Canada Corporation. Meanwhile, renaming the company to “Asahi Kasei Honda Battery Separator Corporation” is planned.
