The partnership between Stellantis and Orano for the recycling of electric vehicle batteries will not materialize as originally planned. In October 2023, the two companies had signed a letter of intent to establish a joint venture for the recycling of spent batteries and production waste. The aim was to recover important raw materials such as cobalt, nickel, and lithium.
Optimizing the recycling process
However, both parties stress that they are considering further forms of collaboration. The original partnership aimed to optimize the recycling process of electric vehicle batteries through a joint project. This was particularly relevant in light of the EU Battery Directive, which requires the use of recycled materials in new batteries from 2031. To this end, Orano had developed a technology that enables the efficient recovery of metals, thereby reducing the need for virgin raw materials.
