Expansion of Northvolt Ett Gigafactory is Stopped

As part of its strategic review, Northvolt has announced further measures to reduce its activities in Sweden. As a result, the expansion of the Northvolt Ett plant in Skellefteå has been put on hold. The construction project was intended to create an additional annual cell production capacity of 30 gigawatt-hours.

Northvolt Labs expansion slowed down

This development follows the decision to put the production of cathode material at the plant into a maintenance phase in order to reduce operating costs. At the same time, the Northvolt Labsʼ expansion in Västerås will be slowed down. While the existing research and development center will be retained, corporate functions in Stockholm will also be reduced.

Focus on core business

The cost-cutting measures and the focus on cell production at Northvolt Ett will result in a significant reduction in the number of employees. In Skellefteå 1,000 jobs are to be cut, in Västerås 400 jobs and in Stockholm 200 jobs. Northvolt justifies this move with the need to focus on the ramp-up phase of the first 16 GWh production capacity in Skellefteå and to secure cooperation with existing automotive customers. According to the company, the decisions are necessary to adapt Northvolt to the current market conditions and to remain successful in the long term.
