Volvo Trucks has announced that construction of its planned battery factory in Mariestad, Sweden, has been delayed again. Originally scheduled to begin in 2024, the start of construction had already been pushed to 2025. According to the company, the date now will be delayed by another twelve to 24 months. While no specific reasons were given, Volvo claimed the schedule is being reviewed to ensure optimal operations.
Uncertainty About Production Start
According to Volvo, it is still unclear whether the delayed start of construction will also affect the plantʼs start-up. Originally intented to begin operations in 2028, the current target for the start of production is 2030. The company stressed that it wants to match production with demand for battery-electric applications to avoid building up too much production capacity before the market is sufficiently developed. Volvo is currently carrying out the process independently, but is in talks with potential partners to explore collaborations for the project.
