U.S. battery developer SES AI Corporation has announced that its 100-ampere-hour lithium metal cells for use in electric vehicles meet the safety requirements of Chinaʼs GB38031-2020 standard. The norm is a mandatory national regulation in China specifically designed for electric mobility. SES AI claims to be the first company in the industry to receive this certification for lithium metal cells.
Standard focuses on abuse testing
The GB38031-2020 standard includes a series of tests, such as for overcharge, deep discharge, external short circuit, heating, temperature cycling, and crushing. Meeting these requirements confirms that the companyʼs lithium metal cells can effectively combat safety risks under extreme conditions. According to the company, this certification is used as a global standard by all of its electric mobility OEM partners. In 2023, SES AI had already received the UN38.3 safety certification.
