Toyota Motor is planning to build a battery factory for electric vehicles in Japan’s Fukuoka Prefecture, according to a report in the Nikkei Business Daily. The batteries would be supplied to a plant that makes vehicles under the company’s Lexus brand.
Toyota intends to make Kyushu Island, where Fukuoka is located, a central part of its battery supply chain. At the same time, Kyushu will serve as an export base for the Asian region.
The plant would likely be operated by Primearth EV Energy. This is a subsidiary of Toyota that specializes in battery production. Exact investment costs and the start of construction of the plant have not yet been determined, according to Nikkei. The newspaper obtained information about the project from unnamed sources. Toyota itself has not yet commented on the report.
