Das Batterie-Recycling-Unternehmen Redwood hat angekündigt, einen „Battery Materials Campus“ zu errichten. In der Nähe von Charleston im US-Bundesstaat South Carolina will der Konzern auf einer Fläche von knapp 2,5 Millionen Quadratmetern Anoden- und Kathodenkomponenten recyceln, veredeln und herstellen. In den Aufbau des Werks sollen 3,5 Milliarden US-Dollar fließen.
Straffer Zeitplan und Erweiterungsoptionen
Viele Partner von Redwood Materials – etwa Toyota, Volvo, Panasonic und Envision AESC – sowie weitere Batteriehersteller sind bereits in der Region des sogenannten Battery Belt angesiedelt. Nach Fertigstellung der neuen Anlage will Redwood ein jährliches Produktionsvolumen von 100 Gigawattstunden Kathoden- und Anodenkomponenten erreichen. Dabei biete der Standort die Möglichkeit, den Betrieb auf potenziell mehrere hundert Gigawattstunden pro Jahr zu erweitern, um eine steigende Nachfrage zu decken.
Spatenstich und Inbetriebnahme im selben Jahr
Der erste Spatenstich für den Carolina-Campus soll im ersten Quartal 2023 gesetzt werden. Bereits bis Ende 2023 möchte Redwood den ersten Recycling-Prozess in Betrieb nehmen. Schritt für Schritt sollen anschließend die nachgelagerte Komponentenfertigung ausgebaut und die Prozesse skaliert werden. Wann die geplante Kapazität von 100 Gigawattstunden erreicht werden soll, teilt der Konzern indes nicht mit.
