Die Recycling-Kooperation Hydrovolt hat im südnorwegischen Fredrikstad den kommerziellen Betrieb aufgenommen. Die Recycling-Anlage des Joint Ventures von Northvolt und Hydro verfügt über eine Jahreskapazität von rund 12.000 Tonnen Batteriepacks – gleichbedeutend mit etwa 25.000 Elektrofahrzeugbatterien.

Weitere Kapazitäten für Europa in Planung

Mit der Inbetriebnahme der Anlage stehe eine nachhaltige Lösung für das Recycling sämtlicher norwegischer Elektrofahrzeugbatterien bereit, die aus dem Markt genommen werden oder das Ende ihrer Lebensdauer erreicht haben. Derzeit prüfe Hydrovolt die Ausweitung der Recycling-Kapazitäten in Europa mit dem langfristigen Ziel, bis 2025 etwa 70.000 Tonnen und bis 2030 rund 300.000 Tonnen Batteriepacks wiederzuverwerten. Dies entspricht etwa 150.000 Elektrofahrzeug-Akkus im Jahr 2025 und 500.000 Batterien im Jahr 2030.

Recycling von 95 Prozent der Akku-Materialien

Durch ein neuartiges Prozessdesign soll Hydrovolt etwa 95 Prozent der in einer Batterie enthaltenen Materialien zurückgewinnen und sortieren können – darunter Kunststoffe, Kupfer, Aluminium und die schwarze Masse. Die Anlage verfüge über mehrere Konzepte zur Maximierung der Materialrückgewinnung. Dazu zähle ein Staubsammelsystem, das sicherstelle, dass wertvolles Material aufgefangen werde, das normalerweise durch mechanische Recycling-Schritte verlorenginge. Laut Arvid Moss, Executive Vice President bei Hydro, lässt sich Aluminium mit nur fünf Prozent der ursprünglich zur Herstellung von Primäraluminium benötigten Energie recyceln, was es zu einem perfekten Material für eine Kreislaufwirtschaft mache.
