Der amerikanische Automobilkonzern General Motors Co wird zukünftig Kobalt vom Bergbauunternehmen Glencore PLC beziehen. Dies gab der Konzern am Dienstag bekannt. Das Kobalt soll in den Elektrofahrzeugen des Konzerns verwendet werden.

Kobalt aus australischer Miene

Das Kobalt, das von Glencores Murrin-Murrin-Betrieb in Australien stammt, soll in den Ultium-Batteriekathoden von GM verwendet werden und die Fahrzeuge Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV und Cadillac Lyriq antreiben, so die Unternehmen in einer gemeinsamen Erklärung. Genaue Mengenangaben und Umfänge des Geschäfts wurden nicht bekannt gegeben

Absicherung der Lieferkette

Die derzeitigen Unsicherheiten in der Lieferkette von kritischen Rohstoffen bewegt vermehrt Konzerne Verträge abzuschließen um Unterbrechungen zu vermeiden. Bei diesen Rohstoffen handelt es sich unter anderem um die zur Herstellung von Batterien benötigten Metalle wie Lithium, Nickel und Kobalt. Im vergangenen Jahr hatte das Unternehmen angekündigt, in ein Lithiumprojekt in den USA zu investieren, das bis 2024 zum größten des Landes werden soll. Ford erklärte am Montag, dass er eine vorläufige Vereinbarung über den Kauf von Lithium aus einer Anlage von Lake Resources NL in Argentinien unterzeichnet habe.
