Der bayerische Automobilkonzern BMW will fünf Gigafabriken zur Produktion von Batteriezellen für eigene E-Fahrzeug-Modelle errichten. Die Werke sollen jeweils in der Nähe zu den bereits exitierenden Elektro-Auto-Produktionsstätten von BMW entstehen. Außerdem entwickle der deutsche Autobauer eine neue Generation von Batteriezellen, die bei geringeren Kosten die Gesamtleistung des Antriebsstrangs verbessere.

Globales Produktionsnetz angestrebt

Die fünf geplanten Gigafabriken sollen mit Partnern aus der Batterie-Industrie aufgebaut und betrieben werden. Laut BMW-Einkaufsvorstand Joachim Post sieht die Strategei des Konzerns vor, künftig ein globales Batterie-Produktionsnetz zu betreiben. Details zu möglichen Standorten, Industriepartnern, Investitionsvolumen und Produktionsstarts gab BMW während seiner Jahrespressekonferenz indes nicht bekannt. In jüngster Vergangenheit hatte BMW jedoch mit unterschiedlichen Zellherstellern Lieferverträge abgeschlossen. Dazu zählen unter anderem CATL, Samsung SDI, Eve Energy und Northvolt.

Neue Fahrzeug-Generation ab 2025 am Markt

BMW-Vorstandsvorsitzender Oliver Zipse rechnet indes mit einem stärkeren Absatz batterieelektrischer Fahrzeuge. Konkret heißt es, dass bereits vor dem Jahr 2030 mehr als jedes zweite verkaufte Auto ein reines E-Mobil sein könnte. Grund dafür sei eine neue Fahrzeuggeneration, die ab Mitte des Jahrzehnts auf den Markt komme. Die Elektroautos sollen mit einem komplett neuen Antriebsstrang sowie mit Batteriezellen der neuesten Generation ausgestattet sein. Die Entwicklung der neuen Zellen sei bereits in vollem Gange.
