Der Batteriehersteller „Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology“ hat in China mit dem Bau eines großen Werks zur Produktion neuartiger Feststoffbatterien begonnen. Dabei gehe es neben reinen Feststoffzellen auch um hybride Batteriezellen mit flüssigem und festem Elektrolyten. Die Fabrik soll im Endausbau eine Jahreskapazität von 100 Gigawattstunden aufweisen.

Auftakt-Investition von 1,5 Milliarden Euro

Die Batteriefabrik werde in der Stadt Zibo in der ostchinesischen Provinz Shandong errichtet und soll bei ihrer Fertigstellung eine Fläche von mehr als 366.000 Quadratmetern umfassen. In der ersten Investitionsphase sollen 10,2 Milliarden chinesische Yuan – umgerechnet rund 1,5 Milliarden Euro – aufgewendet worden sein. Das Gesamtvolumen werde sich auf etwa 5,7 Milliarden Euro belaufen. Die Produktionskapazität der ersten Phase betrage jährlich 20 Gigawattstunden hybrider und reiner Feststoffbatterien. Der Start sei noch für das laufende Jahr geplant. Laut Angaben von WeLion weisen die hybriden Feststoffzellen den höchsten Sicherheitsfaktor und die höchste Energiedichte in China auf.

NIO gilt als möglicher Abnehmer

Als potenzieller Abnehmer der WeLion-Batterien wird der chinesische Elektrofahrzeug-Hersteller NIO gehandelt. Das Unternehmen hatte Anfang 2021 verlauten lassen, ein „ET7“ genanntes Fahrzeug mit einer 150 Kilowattstunden fassenden Feststoffbatterie produzieren zu wollen. Gründer und Vorsitzender William Li hatte seinerzeit in einem Interview klargestellt, dass es sich dabei um eine Semi-Solid-State-Batterie auf Basis hybrider Feststoffzellen handele. Weder NIO noch WeLion haben bis dato eine Zusammenarbeit verkündet, jedoch teilte das Tech-Magazin „36kr“ vor Kurzem mit, dass WeLion der Lieferant der Feststoffzellen für NIO sei. Laut dem Bericht stellt NIO „erhebliche Ressourcen“ für WeLion bereit.
