Das deutsch-kanadische Unternehmen Rock Tech Lithium hat für das Frühjahr 2022 den Baubeginn einer Produktionsstätte für Lithiumhydroxid bekanntgegeben. Das neue Werk soll im brandenburgischen Guben und damit nur etwa 60 Kilometer von der Tesla-Gigafactory in Grünheide entfernt entstehen. Angepeilt sei eine jährliche Lithiumhydroxid-Produktion von 24.000 Tonnen. Dies sei genug für rund 500.000 Traktionsbatterien für Elektrofahrzeuge.
Produktionsstart für 2024 vorgesehen
Derzeit wird Lithium zum größten Teil noch in Raffinerien im asiatischen Raum produziert. Rock Tech Lithium will mittels der geplanten Konverter-Fabrik im Industriepark Guben-Süd jedoch nun selbst Lithiumhydroxid aufbereiten. Der Ausgangsrohstoff für das Lithiumhydroxid werde aus einer Fördermine im kanadischen Ontario gewonnen. Das Gesamtinvestitionsvolumen beziffert Rock Tech auf bis zu 470 Millionen Euro. Die Fabrik soll im Jahr 2024 den Betrieb aufnehmen.
Brandenburg wird zum Produktions-Hotspot
Rock Tech plant, ein zentraler Player in der Wertschöpfungskette der Batterietechnologie in Brandenburg zu werden und positioniert sich daher als bedeutsamer Lithium-Lieferant für die Automobilindustrie. Neben Rock Tech siedeln sich auch andere Unternehmen in Brandenburg an. So will Tesla will in Grünheide Elektrofahrzeuge und Batteriezellen produzieren, und BASF beabsichtigt in Schwarzheide den Bau einer Kathodenfabrik. Bis auf die Rohstoffgewinnung ist demnach alles zum Bau von batterieelektrischen Fahrzeugen in Brandenburg vorhanden.
Fünf weitere Werke in Europa geplant
Rock-Tech-Lithium-Chef Dirk Harbecke erklärte, dass das Unternehmen einen geschlossenen Kreislauf für Lithium errichten wolle. Dazu strebe Rock Tech an, die Lithium-Gewinnung bis zum Ende des laufenden Jahrzehnts zu 50 Prozent aus recycelten Altbatterien zu realisieren. Außerdem plane das Unternehmen, fünf weitere Werke in Europa zu errichten.
