Toyota und Joint-Venture-Partner Panasonic haben sich mit dem Unternehmen BHP in einem „Memorandum of Understanding“ über die Belieferung mit Nickel geeinigt. Der Rohstoff soll aus Abbaugebieten in Westaustralien bezogen und als Nickelsulfat ausgeliefert werden. Über die Liefermenge ist derzeit nichts bekannt.
Abbaustandards sollen überwacht werden
Ähnlich zu zahlreichen anderen Projektankündigungen im Bereich der Batterieproduktion, fließen auch in das aktuelle Vorhaben Bestrebungen zur Nachhaltigkeit und ethnischen Verträglichkeit ein. So sei es das Ziel des Projekts, nicht nur eine ausreichende Menge an Nickel bereitzustellen, sondern das Produkt auch rückverfolgbar zu machen, um auf diese Weise die Abbaustandards zu überwachen. „Diese Partnerschaft hat großes Potenzial, wettbewerbsfähige Rohstoffe zu sichern und Recycling-Kreisläufe für Batteriematerial zu schaffen, die für die künftige Entwicklung von Elektrofahrzeugen entscheidend sind“, sagt Masaharu Katayama, „Chief Operating Officer Metals“ bei Toyota Tsusho.
„Einige der weltweit emissionsärmsten Nickelprodukte“
Auch Jessica Farrell, „Nickel West Asset President“ bei BHP, betont: „Die Nachfrage für Nickel in Batterien wird in den nächsten zehn Jahren schätzungsweise um mehr als 500 Prozent steigen. Wir haben in unsere Nickel-Anlagen und in Stromverträge investiert, um nun einige der weltweit nachhaltigsten und emissionsärmsten Nickelprodukte liefern zu können.“
