Der britische Chemiekonzern Johnson Matthey (JM) hat nahe Oxford ein „Battery Technology Centre“ eröffnet. Der neue Standort soll eine wesentliche Rolle bei der Entwicklung von Batteriematerialien spielen. Vor Ort baut das Unternehmen vorhandene Kapazitäten aus, um vor allem die eigene nickelreiche eLNO-Kathodenchemie voranzutreiben.
„Die neue Anlage ist ein wichtiger Meilenstein auf unserem Weg zur Entwicklung eines nachhaltigen Ökosystems für Batteriematerialien“, sagt Robert MacLeod, CEO von Johnson Matthey: „Es unterstreicht die Fortschritte, die wir bei der Kommerzialisierung unseres Geschäfts mit Batteriematerialien erzielen.“ Laut Christian Günther, Chef des Bereichs „Battery Materials“, verfügt das Unternehmen vor Ort über ein engagiertes Produktentwicklungs-Team, das eine schnellere Anpassung der eLNO-Kathodenmaterialien an die Bedürfnisse der Kunden ermöglicht.
30.000 Tonnen Kathodenmaterial
Mit Blick auf das neue Erzeugnis hatte JM erst im April des laufenden Jahres umfangreiche Pläne vorgestellt. So kündigte der Konzern an, für die entsprechende Produktion eine neue Fabrik in Finnland aufbauen zu wollen und dafür eine strategische Partnerschaft mit der Finnish Minerals Group einzugehen. Produktionsziel für das neue Werk in Finnland seien 30.000 Tonnen Kathodenmaterial – und damit eine strategische Ergänzung der ersten Produktionsanlage im zentralpolnischen Konin.
