In einem aktuellen Interview berichtet Svolt-Europa-Chef, Kai-Uwe Wollenhaupt, über die Pläne des asiatischen Batteriespezialisten und gibt Einblick in die Produktionsplanung in Überherrn, im Saarland. Zudem werden die Themen Umwelt und Zukunft im Gespräch vom Wollenhaupt mit der Internetplattform Industrie.de adressiert im Rahmen der Batteriezellfertigung von Svolt adressiert.

Kernpunkt des Gesprächs ist vor allem die von Svolt geplante Produktion in Überherrn. Nach Aussage von Wollenhaupt prüfte Svolt zwischen Oktober 2019 und September 2020 32 Standorte in ganz Europa, bevor die Wahl auf Überherrn im Saarland fiel. Für Deutschland sprachen demnach damals in der Standortentscheidung die „zentrale Lage im Zentrum des europäischen Wirtschaftsraums, eine hervorragende Infrastruktur sowie ein ebenso florierendes wie inspirierendes Umfeld mit international erfolgreichen Unternehmen“. Für das Saarland als deutschen Standort der Fabrik, hätte dann im Folgenden vor allem die hohe Wertschätzung des Projektes durch Gespräche in höchsten Regierungskreisen des Landes gesprochen, ein Punkt, der final sehr überzeugt hätte. Bekannterweise bestätigte Wollenhaupt auch die maximale Produktionsleistung von 24 GWh an Batteriezellkapazität, die langfristig am Standort erreicht werden soll. Geplant sei, dass hierfür im dritten Quartal 2021 der erste Spatenstich gesetzt wird und 2023 die Produktion startet.

Im Detail äußert sich Wollenhaupt auch auf die Frage nach der Nachhaltigkeit der Produktion. Demnach sei es das Ziel geschlossene Ressourcen-Kreisläufe zu etablieren. Konkrete Ansatzpunkte zur Nachhaltigkeit sind aktuell die Produktion auf Basis von 100% „grünen Strom“, eine effektive Nutzung von Wasserkreisläufen, zum Beispiel durch Regenwassernutzung, sowie ein Material- und Abfalloptimierter Produktionsprozesse, beispielsweise durch Nutzung des Trockenbeschichtungsverfahren.

Um die Batteriechemie ebenso wie die Produktionsprozesse nachhaltiger zu gestalten wäre es das Ziel, dass Zellen künftig auf den von Svolt entwickelten NMX-Ansatz basieren, eine Materialmix, der Kobalt in der Kathodenchemie überflüssig macht. Hierdurch würden zum einen die immer wieder in Diskussion stehenden Abbaubedingungen von Kobalt durch Ersatz des Metalls gelöst und zum anderen auch Herstellungskosten gespart.
