Das seit 2016 laufende Batterieforschungscluster ProZell, dass heute auf einer Partnerschaft von 15 verschiedenen forschenden Einrichtungen, darunter die RWTH Aachen, das KIT, die Hochschule Landshut und das DLR, beruht, hat in einem Ergebnisbericht die wichtigsten Forschungserkenntnisse aus der ersten Förderphase veröffentlicht.

Die unter anderem von Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) mit 16 Millionen Euro gestützte Auftaktphase, die von 2016 bis 2019 lief, brachte vor allem Erkenntnisse in der Elektrodenproduktion. Die Elektrodenproduktion ist die Basis für eine spätere Assemblierung von Batteriezellen, indem hier die reaktiven Bereiche der Anode und Kathode vorproduziert werden. Hier wurde als eine Kernerkenntnis herausgearbeitet, dass der Einsatz von voluminöseren Elektroden zu einer Verbesserung der Energieeigenschaften führt. Weiterhin war es gelungen das Verfahren der Trockenbeschichtung zu kreieren. Ein Verfahren, dass ohne den Einsatz von in der Elektrodenproduktion oft üblichen Lösemitteln, meist NMP, auskommt und zu ebenso zu einer sowohl energieeffizienten als auch ökologischen Produktion von Batteriezellen beiträgt. Im Weiteren wurde ein Vorhersagemodell entwickelt, dass weiterführend zur Erhöhung der Prozesseffizienz beiträgt. Insgesamt sei es nach Aussage des vorgelegten Berichtes möglich gewesen viele Prozessschritte um mehr als 50% zu beschleunigen und dabei die Kosten in den einzelnen Prozessen um mehr als 20% zu reduzieren.

Mit Bezug auf die zahlreichen positiven Projektergebnisse hat das BMBF beschlossen seine Förderung für das ProZell-Kompetenzcluster weiter voranzutreiben und hat seine Unterstützung seit 2019 bereits verstärkt fortgesetzt
