Nach aktuellen Informationen arbeitet CATL an einer Lösung die Batteriemodule und ferner auch Batteriepacks überflüssig machen soll. Stattdessen sucht der chinesische Batteriehersteller, der hinter LG Chem aktuell Nummer 2 auf dem Weltmarkt ist und seit einiger Zeit auch Tesla beliefert, Lösungen, um Batteriezellen direkt in der Fahrzeugkarossiere einzubauen. Nachdem bereits bekannten „Cell-to-Pack“-Ansatz entsteht nun die Idee von „Cell-to-Chassis“.
Die Grundlegende Überlegung klingt erstmal sehr vielversprechend, da sie eine merkliche Gewichtsreduktion im Fahrzeug umsetzen kann und mehr Raum schafft. Betracht kann man hierzu das Batteriepack des Tesla Model 3, so sieht man folgendes: Der Akku des Tesla Model 3 besteht aus 4.416 einzelnen Batteriezellen. Die Batteriezellen sind in vier großen Modulen angeordnet, welche wiederum sogenannte „Bricks“ enthalten, die je 46 Batteriezellen fassen. Umhaust werden alle Module, sowie verbaute Elektronik, von einer Metallwanne. Nimmt man also an, dass eine 21700 Batteriezelle in etwas 70g wiegt, so erreicht man ein reines Zellgewicht von ca. 309 kg. Teslas Model 3 Batteriepack in Gesamtheit wiegt jedoch 480 kg. Das bedeutet, dass sich hier rein theoretisch 171 kg (abzüglich Elektronik) Gewicht pro Fahrzeug einsparen ließen, wenn Batteriezellen direkt im Chassis verbaut würden.
Durch den Einbau von Batteriezellen direkt im Chassis wird es also möglich Gewicht einzusparen und auch mehr Batteriezellen einzubauen. Daraus ergibt sich, dass die Reichweit von Elektroautos, eines der aktuellen Hauptanliegen von Fahrzeugherstellern, ohne Batterietechnologische Anpassung (Feststoffbatterie, Lithium-Schwefel) weiter zunimmt.
CATL Vorsitzender Zeng Yuqun zeigt sich im Hinblick auf die Technologie optimistisch diese noch vor Ende des laufenden Jahrzehnts auf dem Markt zu bringen. Bis dahin bleiben viele technische Fragen offen. Wie sieht zum Beispiel das Kühlsystem aus oder wie wird die Crashsicherheit gewährleistet? Man kann nur auf die Lösungen von CATL gespannt bleiben.
