Forscher der Cockrell School of Engineering an der University of Texas in Austin sagen, sie hätten den Code für eine kobaltfreie Hochenergie-Lithium-Ionen-Batterie geknackt und die Tür zur Reduktion der Herstellungskosten von Batterien bei gleichzeitiger Leistungssteigerung geöffnet.

Dazu haben die Forscher in einer aktuellen Studie die gängige, kobalthaltige Kathodenchemie so angepasst, dass diese auf 89% Nickel, Mangan und Aluminium und keinem Kobalt mehr basiert. Insbesondere der, im Vergleich mit gängigen Batteriezellen, höhere Nickelanteil führt dazu, dass Batteriezellen mehr Energie speichern können und so beispielsweise weitere Reichweiten für elektrische Fahrzeuge bieten. Eine Erhöhung des Nickelanteils in der Batterie führt meist jedoch ebenso zu einem trade-off, da durch die höhere Leistung oftmals die Zyklenbeständigkeit der Zelle abnimmt. Reduziert man zudem den Anteil von Kobalt innerhalb einer Batteriezelle so hat dies weiterhin bisher zur Folge, dass die chemischen Reaktionen innerhalb der Batteriezellchemie langsamer ablaufen, was wiederum dazu führt, dass die Batterie nur langsam entladen oder geladen werden kann.

Die Wissenschaftler betonen jedoch, dass sie alle Vorteile ohne die gängigen, erwartbaren Nachteile der Änderung in der Zellchemie erreichen konnten. Das auf Basis dessen, dass sie in ihren Versuchen eine ideale Kombination der Kathodenmetalle gefunden hätten. Besonders positiv stimmt die Forscher die Tatsache, dass bei Ihrer Batterie der teuerste Bestanteil der Zelle, das Element Kobalt, komplett wegfällt und die Batterie so deutlich günstiger in der Herstellung wird.

Schlüssel der effektiven Weiterentwicklung der neuen Batteriezelle sei die auf atomarer Ebene ideale Verteilung der Metall-Ionen gewesen. Die gleichmäßige Verteilung der Metall-Ionen bedingt, dass die Leistungsfähigkeit der Kathode nicht reduziert wird. Insbesondere bei kobaltfreien Ansätzen besteht sonst meist das Problem, dass es zu lokalen Ansammlungen von Ionen kommt, was die Leistungsfähigkeit der Batteriezelle dann deutlich reduziert und wo andere Forschungen scheiterten.
