Die beiden britischen Unternehmen AMTE Power und Britishvolt haben angekündigt, eine Batteriezellfertigung im Gesamtwert von 4 Milliarden Pfund in Großbritannien zu bauen und damit die erste große Gigafactory auf der Insel zu betreiben. Insbesondere soll das Projekt die wankende englische Automobilindustrie durch einen starken Impuls in Richtung eigenständiger Batterieproduktion und ferner Zukunftsfähigkeit unterstützen.
Um dies zu erreichen haben die beiden Unternehmen AMTE Power und Britishvolt nun eine erste Absichtserklärung unterzeichnet, welche besagt, dass die Unternehmen künftig gemeinschaftlich an der Produktion von Lithium-Ionen-Batterien für Elektroautos arbeiten wollen.
Dieser erste große Impuls scheint für die britische Automobilindustrie lebensnotwendig zu sein. Allein im Jahr 2019 schrumpfte die britische Automobilindustrie um 14,2%, sodass die Prognosen schon vor Corona düster aussahen. Für das laufende Geschäftsjahr rechnet dabei allein Jaguar Land Rover aktuell mit einem Verlust von 660 Millionen Euro und kündigte an, dass Modellportfolio deutlich zu schärfen.
Ein großes Problem im Bereich der zukünftigen englischen Fahrzeugentwicklung und -produktion ist, dass es nahezu keinen Batteriezellfertigung gibt. Schon im März dieses Jahres warnte die britische Faraday Institution, in ihrem Bericht “UK Electric Vehicle and Battery Production Potential to 2040” davor, dass Großbritannien ein erhebliches Risiko habe weit hinter die zentraleuropäischen Automobilbauer zu fallen. Faraday berechnete dazu, dass ein Bedarf an sieben Gigfafactorys in Großbritannien bis zum Jahre 2040 mit einer Jahresproduktion von 20 GWh bestehen würde und dass allein der Batteriesektor, trotz verstärkter Automatisierung, in diesem Zeitraum dringend benötigte 220.000 Arbeitsstellen in ganz Großbritannien schaffen könnte. Die Faraday Institution stellte jedoch ebenso fest, dass zu wenig Bemühungen zur Batteriezellfertigung landesweit verfolgt würden.
